責男一歩前で

 Here's a handwritten sign in the restroom where I work in front of the urinals. 

私 - I
は- Main subject particle
 汚しません（よごしません）- Don't make dirty/pollute
責男（せめおとこ）- Responsible man
も - Particle that means 'also'
一歩（いっぽ）- One step
前（まえ）- Forward/Closer
で - Particle that can be used with place and sometimes can end a sentence

Translation: I don't make it dirty, so the responsible man also take one step forward.

Honestly, I had a lot of trouble with these two Kanji:

The style in which it is handwritten doesn't read very well for my untrained eye in handwritten Kanji. I'm so use to seeing Kanji in books and on computer screens in their digital format that sometimes the hand written version looks alien to me. Especially 男. The line on the left doesn't connect to the rest of the square so I was convinced it was something else but after using all my resources I've concluded that it has to be 男.

暴力団を恐れない

This sign is in front of a Pachinko parlor in Nishinomiya. Pachinko is type of pinball gambling except you don't actually get to hit the ball to earn points. You shoot the ball and then watch it bounce around with the hope of winning. Some machines have plasma screens that unfold stories with the more points you win. Popular games are usually anime based but I've seen machines with the television show 24 and the movie Ghost.

暴力団（ぼうりょくだん）- Gang/Thugs (a violent group)
等（など）- Usually used as 'etc.' but also used to state an example with 'such as'
反社会的（はんしゃかいてき）- antisocial
勢力（せいりょく）- power/force/influence
から - Particle for from or because
の - Particle used in possessives
不当（ふとう）- unjust/unfair
要求（ようきゅう）- demand
は - Main subject particle marker
断固（だんこ）- decisive/adamant
拒否（きょひ）- denial/refusal

Translation:  Unfair demands from violent groups, such as antisocial forces, refuse adamantly.

Down at the bottom:
暴力団を恐れない - I don't fear the gangs
暴力団に金をださない - I don't give money to gangs
暴力団を利用しない - I don't use gangs

恐れない（おそれない） - Not afraid

Grammar Note
―団,When used at the end of a noun indicates that it involves a 'Group' or 'Team'.
反―, When used in front of a noun indicates that it is 'anti(noun)'.

This is an interesting sign I saw walking back from Yodoyabashi after helping one of my students with his interview with the American embassy to get his student visa.

Translation
Do you also throw away the same as in front of your house?

NO! ポイ捨て（すて）- No Littering

子供（こども）- Children
も - Particle that means 'also'
みています- seeing; looking

Translation
No littering! Children are also looking.

が - Subject particle
キレイな - beautiful (な adjective)

を - Particle to like the noun and verb

Translation
The manners of one person makes a beautiful town.

I doubt a young child would yell at an old man for throwing cigarette butts on the ground. If a young child did do that the old man would probably slap him or say something else entirely rude to the child. I guess if the man was weak spirited the child could get away with it and the old would apologize and pick it up, but I've never seen that before unless it was the child's grandpa. Otherwise children don't really like talking to strangers let alone shaming them in picking up their garbage. Kids litter more than anyone and adults who can understand the environmental impact of littering and choose to ignore it are setting a bad example.

I once saw some teenage kids throw trash into the river. I gave them a 'what the hell?' look and they looked back at me like 'mind your own business stupid foreigner, this is our country'. It was kind of disturbing but then again the Japanese ask for it. How so? Well if you've ever been to Japan you may have noticed that there is a brutal lack of trash cans in this country. There are about a million vending machines and can dispensers next to them for recycling bottles and cans but no trash cans for miles at a time. So why carry your trash with when you could just throw it on the ground? More than likely someone will come along and clean it up for you.

But not in the river...come on!

I posted this on the twitter account a few weeks back. Let's take a look in more detail to the meaning.

電車（でんしゃ）- Train
に - Particle to say 'of'
ご注意（ちゅうい）- Be Careful

黄色い（きいろ）- Yellow
線（せん）- Line
の - Possessive particle
内側（うちがわ）- Inside (behind)
で - Particle to say 'at'
おまちねがいます- Please wait

Translation
Be careful of the train. Please wait inside the yellow line.

Sometimes people and usually children play on the other side of the yellow line. It drives me mad or rather makes me terribly nervous. I've never seen anyone jump in front of the train and I hope I never do. I have been late because of death by train suicide and it's a real pain. Recently the train lines have imposed a fine for jumpers. Of course the jumpers are dead but the families have to pay for the clean up and loss of time. They hope that this will discourage people from taking that jump. So far I think it has been working. The death by train numbers last year and for this year decreased. Suicide rates haven't. People are just killing themselves in different ways I suppose. Although I heard that Korea beat Japan last year for the number of suicides.

Oh boy this is grim....

This is a popular sign to keep people from feeding those dirty pigeons in Nipponbashi.

ハト - Pigeon
に - Particle used in this sentence to say "to the pigeons"
エサ - Food or Bait
を - Particle to connect a noun to a verb
やらないで - The negative form of やる to say "Don't Do".

Translation
Do no feed the pigeons!! 

This sign doesn't have any Kanji in it, but it's good Japanese to know.

Here is a sign outside a supermarket:

営業（えいぎょう）- Open/Service
時間（じかん）- Time/Hours
の- Possessive Particle
ご案内（あんない）- Information
Translation:  Our service hours information

Many time outside of a restaurant or shop you'll see either of these Kanji in the window or on the door:
準備中（じゅんびちゅう）- In preparation (getting ready to open)
営業中（えいぎょうちゅう）- Open (now selling)

In Japan there is a real plastic bag addiction. You get a plastic bag for everything in this country. I've even received a paper bag put into a plastic bag. Sometimes you go into a combini to buy a candy bar and they put that in a plastic bag all by itself. So now they're promoting the My Bag campaign where you carry your own ECO bag into the supermarket and you don't need a plastic bag.

ひったくり多発

This picture was taken in Neyagawa near a Pachinko Parlor. Of course Pachinko is run by the Yakuza and thus creating a crime area. Actually the Yakuza being very tough criminals are some of the most contributing members of society. Yeah their businesses are a bit on the dark side (gambling, prostitution, supermarkets) ... Wait! Supermarkets?

Yeah that's right the Yakuza here in Osaka own a chain of supermarkets called Super Tamade (スーパー玉出）. I call them the 'disco supermarket' because of their flashing neon lights and loud music. Tamade is usually pretty cheap but very disorganized. It's hard to find what you want in there.

Anyway, the Yakuza usually hold festivals in the neighborhoods and do their best to control crime in their territory. Why? Well of course if there's crime than that draws attention to them and attention is what they don't like so they due their best to stamp it out.

I took this picture in the Karahori shopping street when I was walking home one. The Karahori shopping street, or arcade, is between Tanimachi 4 and Tanimachi 6. During the bombings of Osaka in World War 2 the Karahori shopping street survived and still remains today.

は- Subject Particle
徐行（じょこう）-Going slow/Reduced

で - Indication Particle; Indicates how the action is carried out by the verb

Here's a sign I saw in the bicycle parking area around one of my work places.

ツーロック - A key lock; Usually stays in lock when open and is removed when locked.

Translation: Please be sure to remove the key from the lock.

盗難（とうなん）- Theft/Robbery/Stolen 
を- Particle that links the noun to the verb
防ぎましょう（ふせぎましょ）- Protect/Guard/Prevent

避難器具降下地点

I've seen these signs around town and have some knowledge of the meanings of the Kanji individually but not all together. My first instinct was that it was telling us 'Don't put trash here' and in a way it is yet in another  it's also telling us something very important that I'm glad I took the time to understand.

Let's read:

避難器具降下地点
避難（ひなん）- Evacuation
器具（きぐ）- Equipment
降下（こうか）- Drop/Landing
地点（ちてん）- Point/Zone

Translation: Evacuation Equipment Drop Point

この- This
付近（ふきん）- Vicinity/Around or Near; Can also mean Neighborhood
に - Location particle
物（もの）- Objects
を - Subject to Verb particle
置かないで（おかない）- Don't put
下さい（ください）- Please

Translation: Please don't put objects in this vicinity.

In further inspection of these areas the signs are located I noticed there are rafters and ladders above where, in case of an emergency (fire, earthquake, etc.), the ladder would drop down and people could escape the building in an emergency. Having objects clutter the drop point would prevent people from evacuating safely thus this sign is telling us 'don't put anything here that will get in the way please'.


Grammar Notes

When we want to add please at the end of the verb we conjugate the plain form, 書く, into to the -te form, 書いて, and add ください, for the positive 'Please write.' In the negative form we conjugate to the -nai form, 書かない, and add でください, for the negative 'Please don't write.'

*Be careful with the -nai form conjugations of irregular verbs, verbs that end -う in the plain form change to -あ [う - わ す- さ　く - か　む - ま　る - ら　ぶ - ば　つ - た　ぬ - な]

買わないで下さい - Please don't buy. 
飲まないで下さい - Please don't drink.
待たないで下さい - Please don't wait.

This sign is what I love about Japan! They can take a common sense idea and turn it into a small plastic sign to remind everyone to 'don't clog the toilet'.  At the 100 yen shop I bought a handful of signs for my friends and family for Christmas. They just said things like 非常口、化粧室、駐車禁止。Well everyone hated them and they didn't get it, BUT I wish they would of had this sign instead.

Here is an interesting sign I saw taped to the side of a vending machine on my way home from the station.

谷町四丁目（たにまちよんちょうめ）- A part of Osaka; 
a 丁目 is equivalent to a 'block' in America.

Tanimachi 4 Town Council Promotion

'A town of flying greetings' is a bit strange. What they want is a town where everyone says hello and it visualizes the words 'flying about' around town. This is a great way to improve neighborhood relationships and be friendly with your community. Although this is the only sign I've seen and its pretty small, just an A4 laminated sheet of paper. If this is a message they want to communicate they should have more signs or a bigger sign.

漏水頭上注意

Down on the subway platform there was a handwritten sign with a big red arrow.

漏水（ろうすい）- Water leak
頭上（ずじょう）- Overhead
注意（ちゅうい）- Be careful

Translation
Water leak overhead, be careful.

There was a heavy rain on Monday so the water must of been dripping into the subway. The station employees' must of handcrafted this sign in a hurry and posted it to warn everyone of the dripping water. It's pretty cool to see a handwritten sign.

I found this sign painted on the sidewalk. In Osaka, I don't think your suppose to ride your bike on the sidewalk but it looks to me that this sign is saying otherwise. Let's check it out:

With a picture of a bicycle and these Kanji underneath it's telling us "Bicycles Allowed Passage".

Waling to the station you run into this sign on the side of the road.

 

注意（ちゅうい）- Attention/Caution

保育所（ほいくしょ）- Preschool

あり - Exist (is); short for あります

スピード - Speed

落せ（おとせ）- Slow/Reduce

警察署（けさつしょ）- Police Station 

Translation: Caution. There is a preschool. Slow down. The police.

On the other side of the road is the preschool and during the morning this area is pretty busy with moms and kids going to school. So it's very important to slow down so nobody gets hurt.

I've seen this poster a few times walking in the subway. The meaning is pretty obvious and we've seen a lot of these Kanji before but I like this sign and there is a lot of new Kanji we may not know.

Unfortunately due to the angle and lighting you can't see very well but he's thinking about alcohol.  

飲酒後（いんしゅあと）- After drinking alcohol
の - A particle to declare possession
転落（てんらく）- Fall/Tumble
事故（じこ）- Accident
多発（たはつ）- Frequency
危険（きけん）- Danger; Hazard
転落に - The fall/drop
ご注意（ちゅい）- Be careful/Pay attention
ください - Please

The man in the hat says "ふらっ" which is a verbal 'gasp' of surprise. Thanks a reader on Google+ I've learned I was mistaken about ”ふらっ” it's actually coming from the mans feet and is ふらふら in Japanese meaning "to totter, slip, or fall".

Translation
危険!!飲酒後の転落事故多発!! 転落にご注意ください 
"Danger!! Falling accidents frequently occur after drinking alcohol!! Please pay attention to the drop."

Here "the drop" refers to the standing platform at the station. Even if there wasn't a train coming falling off that edge sober or drunk might be pretty painful. So everyone please be careful.

わたるな

This sign is the whole of the Death by Kanji idea. A sign that looks like its saying 'cross here' is actually saying the opposite .

 

横断（おうだん）- Cross

禁止（きんし）- Prohibited

わたるな（渡るな）- Don't cross

横断禁止 on the sign is telling you 'Crossing Prohibited' and underneath わたるな is also telling you 'Don't cross'. Even though the sign is a picture of a man 'crossing' the road. Well, there is a red line underneath that has some sort of symbol of 'NO' that we are use to seeing in the west yet, it goes underneath the picture not making it very clear to the non-Kanji reader if it's OK or not OK to cross at this point.

Also, 

This sign uses a grammar structure only taught in intermediate or advanced textbooks of Japanese. Typically, when first learn Japanese な at the end of a word, phrase or sentence is an expression used by men to soften an assertion, desire, emotion or judgement.

But, 

At the end of a verb な becomes equivalent to ない and わたるな = 渡らない meaning 'don't cross'.

Other examples:

食べるな（たべるな）- Don't eat.
飲むな（のむな）- Don't drink.
走るな（はしるな）- Don't run.
歩くな（あるくな）- Don't walk.
書くな（かくな）- Don't write.
読むな（よむな）- Don't read.
払うな（はらうな）- Don't pay.
使うな（つかうな）- Don't use.
置くな（おくな）- Don't put.
するな - Don' do.

This is a picture at Neyagawa station 寝屋川市駅.

京阪（けいはん）- These two Kanji represent Kyoto 京 and Osaka  阪 and the public transportation line that goes between both cities in Kansai  関西.

This is a picture I took near one of the schools I've worked at this year.


The business name is Integral. I don't know what they do there but next to this sign is a nice little space. I wasn't sure what they were asking for with the red Kanji so I wanted to do a translation.

自転車（じてんしゃ）- Bicycle
バイク - Motorbike; Motorcycle, Scooter
整理整頓 （せいりせいとん）- Organize
整理 （せいり）- Arrangement
整頓 （せいとん）- noun: Orderliness; adjective: Arranging neatly
お願いします（おねがいします）- Please do us the favor


Translation: Bicycle Parking: Please do us the favor of organizing bicycles and motorbikes neatly.
